[02:12.62]Charlie Chaplin,who died in 1977,

[02:17.80]is considered one of the greatest and funniest actors in the history of the cinema.

[02:24.04]During his lifetime,he acted in 13 films,

[02:29.50]and he wrote,directed 6 and acted in 69 other films.

[02:35.98]Chaplin was born in London in 1889 and first acted when he was five years old.

[02:44.34]At the age of eight,he joined a group of child dancers,

[02:49.67]and at seventeen he set off for the USA with a group of comedy actors.

[02:56.43]During a second trip to the USA in 1912,

[03:01.58]an important film director saw Chaplin acting 7 a very funny part in a play.

[04:09.65]because the equipment for adding sound to films had not yet been developed.

[04:15.90]The development of films with sound became a problem for Chaplin,

[04:32.27]but he added 12 music,which he wrote himself.

[04:36.64]Two of his greatest films,"City Lights" and "Modern Times" were of this kind.

[04:44.08]Chaplin's later films,however,were not well received.

[04:49.52]He made only six films between 1940 and 1966

[04:56.36]and only the first of these is still popular today.

[05:01.51]Chaplin lived the last years of his life in Switzerland,

[05:06.68]where he was buried in 1977.

[05:14.17]he was honoured in a number of ways for his contributions to the film industry.

[05:35.88]One of Charlie Chaplin's most famous films was "The Gold Rush",

[05:42.36]which was made in 1925.

[05:46.31]The film was set in California 13 in the middle of the nineteenth century


[05:52.47]At that time,gold was discovered in California

[05:57.64]and thousands of people rushed there to look for gold,

[06:02.89]so it became known 14 as "the gold rush".

[06:07.33]People said gold could easily be picked up by washing sand from the river
