  Lesson 6

Red light runners

Text:

The San Francisco department 1 of traffic is installing 2 cameras at street intersections 3. The cameras take pictures of cars running red lights. Each camera captures 4 eighty to one hundred cars running red lights a day. Running red lights is a big problem in San Francisco. A policeman says he could write tickets all day just for that. Running red lights causes about one thousand accidents a year. The cameras show drivers not pay attention. They read maps. They talk on cell 5 phone. They look at buildings. The camera sometimes captures the movement 6 when the accident happens. The drivers look surprise. Sometimes they look angry. The camera seems to pay off. There are 40% fewer red light runners at the intersections with cameras. They city has ordered twenty more cameras.

Dialogue:

Running red lights

Woman: A report says running red lights causes one thousand traffic accidents every year.

Man: It’s horrible 7. Why do drivers run red lights then?

Woman: Maybe they know they shouldn’t run a red light, but when they are driving they don’t pay enough attention to traffic lights.

Man: Talking on the cell phone while driving is very dangerous too. It increases the chance of accidents.

Woman: I know. If policeman catches you using the cell phone while driving, you will be fined.
