I know that every cell in my body has a copy of my DNA 1 packed into its nucleus 2. And I also know that if I could somehow unravel 3 the DNA from a single cell, it would be about six feet long. So my question is, is DNA jammed into the nucleus in a sort of random 4 knot? D:Great question! Scientists know that DNA is able to fit into such a small space because it’s wound tightly around proteins. But scientists also thought that DNA was randomly 5 packed in. Researchers at MIT have figured out that that’s not true. The way that DNA is packed in a cell nucleus is more organized. Y:How so? D:Well, the researches aren’t certain–they’ve only discovered clues. But based on what they’ve found, it seems that parts of DNA that are being transcribed 6 or copied are located together. Y:Cool. But so what?I don't mean to seem on curious, but what is it matter whether we know how DNA is organized? D:It matters because the way that DNA is organized affects how it works. In fact, other studies have shown that genes 7 that are near each other may affect one another. They can even switch each other on and off. Y:I see. Like most physical objects,I guess that what DNA does depends at least a part on how its part fit together. D:Right. And the more scientist know about those parts, the better they understand how thw whole thing actually works.
