Brazilian government says it will send in troops to quell 1 the protests over social issues across the country.

The ministry 2 of justice says national forces are set to be sent to five cities including Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Ceara and the capital, Brasilia.

The announcement comes following fresh clashes 3 between protesters and police in Sao Paulo.

A quarter of a million people have taken to the streets in eight of Brazil's major cities over increases in bus fares and complaints about poor governance.

Protesters are also upset about the billions of dollars being spent on hosting the 2014 World Cup and the Olympics in 2016.

  Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff:

"The voices from the streets need to be heard. Those who took the streets gave a direct message to the entire society and above all the government at every level. That direct message, from the streets, was for better schools, for better hospitals and for health benefits and the for the right of people to participate."

The demonstrations 4 are Brazil's largest since 1992, when people took to the streets to demand the impeachment 5 of then-President Fernando Collor de Mello.
