Chapter 4 Unit 1 likes and dislikes

Conversation 1

Man: Hi, Linda, glad to meet you here. How are you?

Woman: Fine, thank you. Tomorrow is my husband's birthday. I bought a tie for him as a birthday present.

Man: Oh, a tie is a good present for a man. You know I like buying ties too. Could you let me have a look?

Woman: Of course. Here you are. What do you think of my tie?

Man: Well, I think it's ok.

Woman: You don't really like it, do you?

Man: Well, en,

Woman: Come on. Be honest with me.

Man: To be honest, your tie is a little too colorful. I don't think it fit your husband.

Woman: En, you may be right. I don't like shopping. I don't know how to choose from so many of things.

Man: It's my favorite. let me help you next time.

Woman: Thank you in advance.

Conversion 1 2

Man: Hello, buddy 2. Are you doing anything this Sunday?

Woman: I have no idea yet. what do you have in mind?

Man: How about going to see an opera with me? Or maybe you would rather see a play.

Woman: To tell you the truth, I would rather see a play. I don't care much for operas. I hear a new play is on at the Grand Theater.

Woman: Good. I'll see if I can get tickets for Sunday. The thing I don't like about going out on Sundays is that it is always so crowded . How about Friday or Saturday?

Man: That's fine. I'd rather go out on Saturday. I'll give you a call about the tickets later. Goodbye!

Conversion 3

Man: Well, what do you think of the apartment?

Woman: The bedroom and the kitchen are all right. But the sitting room is too small for us to entertain our friends.

Man: I can't agree more. There isn't evenroom to turn about.

Woman: In spite 3 of that, I think the balcony is nice. I like the spacious 4 balcony.

Man: Do you? So do I.

Woman: Besides, I enjoy the surroundings 5 very much. It's far away from the crowd and it's quite.

Man: Me, too. Anyway I really love the bedroom. It has an harmonious 6 color and excellent view.

Woman: Actually on the whole, I think the apartment is quite comfortable.

Man: I agree in principle, but we must take everything into account. For example, the rent.

Woman: Yeah. It is a little high. But I think there is room for bargaining with the landlord 7.

Man: I hope so. If the price can be lowered. I think we can take the apartment.

Woman: Well. let's try our best to bargain.

Conversion 4

Woman: Hi, Jack 8. How would you like a dog as a pet?

Man: A dog? My goodness 9. There's nothing I like less than dogs.

Woman: Why? I think dog is one of the best pets. It is a good guard and it can entertain you.

Man: Oh, no, I have been afraid of dogs since I was a child. I think they are cruel and frightening.

Woman: You must be wrong. Dogs are the best friends of human beings. They are very obedient 10.

Man: Maybe. but I prefer to have a cat.

Woman: The last thing I would like is a cat. They are dirty and lazy. He could never expect a pet cat to catch a mouse.

Man: But they are gentle and pretty. And they can be good partners to their masters.

Woman: We can't persuade each other. Then you can have a cat as a pet . I'll have a dog.

Man: That's a good idea. It's unnecessary for both of us to have dogs as our pets.

Conversion 5

Man: Are you watching the TV series now showing on channel 6?

Woman: No. I have not been watching it. I don't care much for soap operas. They are not just my cup of tea.

Man: None are they mine. They are too confusing and far from reality. But a lot of people enjoy watching them. They say soaps are entertaining.

Woman: Yes. Only two kinds of people like watching soap operas.

Man: Who are they?

Woman: Those who don't have to work and those who have too much work. The formal needs something to help them kill time, and the latter needs something to take their minds off work.

Man: You are exactly right. I prefer news and science programmes.

Woman: Me too. I think they are both informative 11 and entertaining.
