Helen: This is Real English from BBC Learning English. I'm Helen.

Zoë:

Helen: Today we're going to look at words and phrases that have recently become part of the English language.

Helen: Today’s new word is 'stakeholder' – S.T.A.K.E.H.O.L.D.E.R. – stakeholder.

Zoë: Stakeholder.

Helen: Well, it's a little complicated, so listen carefully. A stakeholder is a person who owns part of a business.

Helen.

Helen: Certainly. If people have money, they may buy shares in a company. This means they have a stake in that company. They become a stakeholder.

Helen: Well, it's a business word, so you'll hear it if you listen to business news on the TV or radio, and you might read it in the business section of a newspaper.

Zoë: But do you think it's a good idea to be a stakeholder?

Helen: Yes. As long as the business you invest in is successful.

Zoë: Why is that?

Helen: Well, any stakeholders would lose their money if a business fails.

Zoë: I suppose so.

Helen: Well, being a stakeholder is a risk. Anyway, let's recap – stakeholder is –
